Film dari Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie (2015) bersinopsis Bertempat di Jepang yang futuristik setelah berakhirnya perang dunia yang brutal, ilmu pengetahuan telah maju pesat memberikan umat manusia pilihan untuk memperpanjang hidup dan mengurangi penderitaan dengan penggunaan sibernetika yang canggih. Dengan seluruh umat manusia terhubung ke dalam satu sistem pikiran dan kepribadian yang dikenal sebagai hantu, ancaman terbesar terhadap peradaban adalah teroris dunia maya yang mampu membajak tubuh dan ingatan manusia. Ketika virus penginfeksi hantu yang dikenal sebagai Fire-Starter mulai menyebar melalui sistem yang mengakibatkan pembunuhan Perdana Menteri Jepang, Mayor Motoko Kusanagi dan tim elit operasi khusus dipanggil untuk melacak sumbernya.
