Film dari The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) bersinopsis Tragedi romantis sederhana ini dimulai pada tahun 1957. Guy Foucher, seorang montir mobil Prancis berusia 20 tahun, telah jatuh cinta pada Geneviève Emery yang berusia 17 tahun, seorang karyawan di toko payung milik ibunya yang janda, namun mengalami kesulitan finansial. Pada malam sebelum Guy berangkat untuk tur pertempuran selama dua tahun di Aljazair, dia dan Geneviève bercinta. Dia hamil dan harus memilih antara menunggu kembalinya Guy atau menerima lamaran pernikahan dari pedagang berlian kaya.
